International co-production now streaming on TaiwanPlus, spotlighting Taiwan’s<\/span> warmth, hospitality, and cross-cultural storytelling<\/b><\/p>\n

TAIPEI<\/span><\/span>, Sept. 23, 2025<\/span><\/span> \/PRNewswire\/ — TaiwanPlus and Japan’s<\/span> Fuji TV have partnered to produce a special Taiwan<\/span>-focused episode of the Japanese documentary program “May I Stay Tonight?” now streaming worldwide on the TaiwanPlus website. Known for its heartfelt portraits of everyday encounters, the program follows protagonist Schlaf Ishida as he returns to Taiwan<\/span>, the place where his journey first began, highlighting the island’s culture of warmth, hospitality, and human connection.<\/p>\n

Ishida, a 33-year-old Japanese backpacker, has spent the past five years traveling across Japan<\/span> by standing on street corners with a handwritten sign that reads “May I Stay Tonight?” and accepting invitations from strangers to stay in their homes. Having already spent nights in more than 800 households, he first tried this idea in Taiwan<\/span> as a student, where he stood on local street corners with the same sign in search of a place to sleep. His journey is now the focus of “May I Stay Tonight,” a spin-off of Fuji TV’s long-running documentary series “The Nonfiction”, which has aired for more than 30 years. The program follows “Sleeping Bag Ishida” as he continues his travels, uncovering honest and moving stories about the lives of everyday people who welcome him in.<\/p>\n

In this new Taiwan<\/span> special, Ishida returns to Taipei<\/span> and Tainan to retrace his steps. Along the way, he is welcomed by Taiwanese hosts from all walks of life: a university student, a young professional, and an elderly man who recalls vivid memories of Taiwan<\/span> under Japanese colonial rule. The result is a moving portrait of Taiwan’s<\/span> openness and cultural richness, told through the eyes of both visitors and locals.<\/p>\n
